Pre – RMAC (January 2019 to January 2020):
The development of the SSNR started in reality with the formation of the Rehabilitation Medicine Advisory Committee (RMAC) by the current Secretary General, Mr Wail Ahmed, who was a member of the Sudan Doctors’ Union UK Branch (SDU UK) Executive Committee, at that time, and first author of the “December Revolution Centre for Rehabilitation of Traumatic Spinal Cord and Brain Injuries”. Prior to that, there were isolated efforts from Spinal Injuries and Rehabilitation Medicine Consultants, who worked abroad, to support the traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) and traumatic brain injury victims since the start of the December Revolution in collaboration with the Sudanese Diaspora Doctors’ group and Hadhreen Initiative organization (MDT for Sudan) since January 2019. RMAC (January 2020 to January 2021):
The role of the RMAC initially was:
-
To advise the SDU UK, conduct options appraisal and oversee the development of the December Revolution Centre for Rehabilitation of TSCI and TBI.
-
To create a link with the PRM specialty and the Sudanese Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Association (SPRMA) in Sudan.
-
To contribute to the education of the PMR specialty in Sudan – workshops, teaching etc.
The first RMAC meeting was held virtually using Skype on 18/01/2020 and attended by:

The initial communication between RMAC members was by direct phone calls and eventually a WhatsApp group for the RMAC was first created on 01/02/2020.

Since then, the RMAC met regularly via Skype, created Sudan RMAC Skype group and expanded its membership by adding the following colleagues:

On Wednesday 19/02/2020, in collaboration with Hadhreen Organization, the RMAC organised F2F Spinal Injuries outpatient clinics led by led by Mr Aheed Osman with the support of Dr Ahmed Saad and Dr Satty Hassan, RMAC members, at the African Dutch Medical Centre in Khartoum. They reviewed around 6 – 7 spinal injury cases, who were victims of gunshots during the December 2018 Revolution (1st wave). This was the first clinic for these heroes following discharge from the Rehabilitation Unit at the Christian Medical Centre Hospital in Vellore, South India, after they spent 3 – 4 months period of inpatient specialist neurorehabilitation programmes.

In the 2nd week of February 2020, in collaboration with Hadhreen Organization, the RMAC organised 2 F2F Traumatic Brain Injuries home visits led by led by Dr Salwa Ali Ahmed with the support of Dr Ahmed Saad and Dr Satty Hassan, RMAC members for the following heroes:

One of the main achievements of the RMAC in the year 2020 was the conduction of Options Appraisal process firstly by visiting applicant host hospitals in Khartoum including Soba University Hospital, Khartoum Teaching Hospital, Ibrahim Malik Hospital and Omdurman Hospital in February 2020. The visits were carried out in February 2020 by RMAC members:

In collaboration with the SDU UK, the RMAC played a central role in the development of the Rehabilitation Centre Steering Committee in July 2020 to include other stakeholders to promote the development of the “December Revolution Centre for Rehabilitation of Traumatic Spinal Cord and Brain Injuries”. On 16/12/2020, Dr Salwa Ali Ahmed, Dr Satty Hassan and Dr Ahmed Saad, RMAC members visited the Centre of Amira Karrar at Soba University Hospital to explore the option of starting neurorehabilitation outpatient clinics for the SCI and TBI victims of the December 2018 Revolution.
On 20/12/2020, Mr Wail Ahmed, RMAC member, proposed to change the name of the RMAC to the Sudanese Society of Neurological Rehabilitation (Sudanese Society of Neurorehabilitation – SSNR) for the following reasons:

To introduce and develop the specialty of Neurological Rehabilitation in Sudan.

To provide neurorehabilitation training to medical, nursing, physical, occupational therapy and neuropsychology staff in Sudan.
Following approval by the RMAC, the name of the WhatsApp group was changed to Sudanese Society of Neurorehabilitation and a google mail group with the name Sudanese Society of Neurological Rehabilitation was created.

Mujeeb Alrahman, a quadriplegia who was still a minimal consciousness /vegetative state, and a clinic report, was written subsequently.

On 29/12/2020, Mr Wail Ahmed, RMAC Member, completed joint virtual/telephone clinics using Skype calls to see the December 2018 Revolution spinal cord injury victims. The first 2 cases were seen by Mr Wail Ahmed virtually with Dr Ahmed Saad on Skype call on 29/12/2020 at the African Dutch Medical Centre in Khartoum and clinic reports were produced afterwards.

On 12/01/2021, Dr Salwa Ali Ahmed, SSNR member, completed a home visit for another TBI victim who was in a minimal consciousness state – Omer Eltayeb – and a clinic report was written subsequently.

On 16/01/2021, Mr Aheed Osman, SSNR member, completed a clinic virtually with Dr Satty Hassan on Skype call and reviewed - Al-aagib Nooreldin – a spinal cord injury victim at the African Dutch Medical Centre in Khartoum and clinic report was written afterwards.

The first draft of the SSNR constitution/bylaws was written on 07/09/2021 on 23 pages.

On 31/10/2021, the SSNR conducted an urgent meeting to discuss management plans for the gunshot injured victims of TBI and TSCI during mass demonstrations following the 25th October 2021 military coup.

On 01/11/2021, following the 25th October Military Coup, the SSNR Steering Committee wrote a Standard Operational Procedure (SSNR – SOP1) document is to start the process of opening a specialist hyper-acute rehabilitation unit in Soba University Hospital for management of traumatic spinal cord injuries (TSCI), traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and other polytrauma injuries (such as peripheral nerve injuries, multiple limb injuries, amputations etc) that require prolonged period of inpatient rehabilitation. (This SOP was later amended to open and develop the specialist hyper-acute rehabilitation unit in Khartoum Teaching Hospital on 26/03/2022 after it became impossible to develop the unit in Soba University Hospital due to the lack of staffing)

On 17/12/2021, the SSNR Steering Committee organised a meeting with Dr Ehab Tarawa, Deputy General Manager of Soba University Hospital, to discuss the possibility of opening a hyper-acute trauma rehabilitation unit for management of acute TBI and TSCI cases.

SSNR Steering Committee (January 2022 to February 2023):

On 04/01/2022, the SSNR Steering Committee was contacted by a representative from the Sudanese Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Trainees who requested regular teaching sessions about rehabilitation medicine curriculum topics. This triggered the evolution of the SSNR Steering Committee to become structured and pay membership fees to buy a virtual platform (Zoom) to be used to deliver teaching sessions for trainees.

Whilst the name of the SSNR Steering Committee was used in the second half of the Society’s transitional year (from RMAC to SSNR) of 2021, the SSNR lacked the following:

There was no structured Steering Committee with defined responsibilities or offices (President, Secretary General, Treasurer, Academic Secretary etc.)
-
There were no Bylaws to govern the work of the Steering Committee.
-
There was no membership base, bank account or assets.
-
In January 2022, the SSNR Steering Committee entered the final stage of development into a structured organization with defined offices, constitution, Bylaws, membership, bank account and clear targets to become a legitimate professional organization.
